Located near the city center, Verona Porta Nuova experiences an average of around 68,000 daily transits, totaling 25 million users annually.
A typical example of a transit station, with approximately 300 trains passing through daily, it serves as the hub where the urban and suburban public transport networks converge.
Nearby, there is a significant Intermunicipal Bus Terminal that ensures connections with the main municipalities of the Verona hinterland and other provinces in the Veneto region.
Verona Porta Nuova was originally built based on a design by architect Dini between 1914 and 1915, and after World War II, it was rebuilt on the same layout according to the project by architect Narducci.
The station is characterized by a level difference between the external square and the tracks. This structural feature has played a key role in the distribution of services, which are organized according to a very rigid functional plan: at the level of the external square, the Passenger Building has been dedicated to public services, while the upper level, housing the tracks, has been allocated to all railway services.
The metal canopies over the platforms are clearly inspired by the Liberty style, while the roof of the central building and the two side wings is made of reinforced concrete. The baseboards of the interior walls are clad in Veronese marble, and the floors are mosaic, made of ceramic tiles.
The complex does not feature any particularly noteworthy historical or architectural elements, especially considering the recent renovation works carried out in the 1990s. These introduced significant structural and functional changes both outside, with the addition of new glass volumes on the square and alterations to the main façade, and inside.
The functional reorganization of the complex involved the recovery of areas that were previously underutilized, to be allocated to primary and secondary services.
The ticket office, fully renovated, has retained its location on the ground floor, where a new corridor has been created to make the new central glass island dedicated to commercial services more accessible and functional.
The entire system of routes and access to services has been improved through the creation of a new distribution corridor and new access points to the platform level.
The external infrastructures associated with the redevelopment of Verona Porta Nuova station include the rearrangement and functional reorganization of the square in front of the station building, as well as the construction of an underground parking lot on Piazza XXV Aprile, covering a total area of 8,500 square meters and with a capacity of 299 parking spaces.
At Verona Porta Nuova station, a control room is operational to ensure continuous surveillance of the station through security services and the supervision of safety systems.
Additionally, a security service is in place to ensure the monitoring of areas, detection and reporting of non-compliance, and security interventions. Furthermore, emergency management is handled, along with maintenance staff for first response and support to external emergency teams.
To support and optimize human resources, security systems are integrated. Specifically, the station has implemented:
Video surveillance and digital recording systems;
Access control and anti-intrusion systems;
Fire detection systems.
The system, as described, is organized in close coordination with the Railway Police to ensure immediate escalation and management of critical situations.
