The new station concept

When the project developed by architect Marco Tamino is completed, the entire station will have been reorganised into a services pole that can adequately meet the demands and expectations of today’s users.

The whole station will be reorganised to convert it into a services pole that is able to satisfy the needs and expectations of its present usership.
The areas destined for pedestrian routes, primary and secondary services and installations will be significantly increased by the creation of new underground and mezzanine spaces. The various station levels will be connected by new stairways (fixed and moving staircases, ncluding spiral stairs), with lifts for the differently abled, which will ensure a considerable improvement in the station’s comfort and accessibility levels. In addition, two new access staircases down to the basement level will be build (-3,50 metres), one of which will have direct access from the piazza and the other from Corso Lucci, while the existing stairs beneath the platform on the piazza side, following its renovation, will be included within the station area itself.

The works will be completed by Autumn 2009.

Significant improvement works will be carried out on the areas involved in the heavy pedestrian flows to the railway lines and underground metro lines at levels -4 and–3,50 m, which will be renovated and provided with additional service facilities. Lastly, considerable attention will be devoted to information and safety: an ad hoc plan will be prepared regarding communications inside the station together with a programme for improving the surveillance level, comprising an integrated remote surveillance system with a centralised supervision room manned around the clock.
The rehabilitiation and upgrading of the station will be an integral part of a programme also foreseeing the reorganisation of Piazza Garibaldi, currently suffering from a severe case of environmental and social decay along with a chaotically disorganised road traiffic and accesses system.
